The Vendel eased her aching body into the much-needed warm water of the tub. A small sigh escaped her as the scent of sweet almond hit her nostrils. Annie appreciated the privacy of the bathhouse and, more importantly, the chance to rest and recover and clean off the sweat and blood. The soapy waters hid the purpling bruises on her torso, but the pain was there all the same. She hissed as she brought a hand up to her cheek. The abrasion left behind from where the buckler had caught her had scraped away a little bit of skin. She'd have to keep an eye on that just in case.

Still, the Vendel smiled. It was good pain. Honest pain. She had earned her bruises properly. The Donovan Master had agreed to teach her. She let out another long sigh as she leaned back in the tub. The work would be hard, but it would all be worth it eventually. Annie had no illusions about how long her education would take. But in her heart, she knew her Aunt would be proud of her.

Tomorrow, no doubt, there would be new scars and aches. But for now, Annie took comfort in the silent, peaceful waters of her bath.
