Background:

Abandoned as an orphan on the steps of the Vaticine Church with nary but a simple tag to his name, Cardano was an overly bright and rebellious child who ended up a poor fit with the nuns who acted as his caretakers. Oftentimes sneaking out at night to get into shenanigans with other street urchins and toughs, his childhood was peppered sporadically with multiple attempts to runaway only to be recaptured and punished by the nuns, fostering a long and lingering antipathy towards the Vaticine Church.

One by one, as his childhood friends at the orphanage fell to a mixture of violent crime, drug abuse, and escape on ships sailing to far off lands, Cardano fell into line and studied the Vaticine works at the behest of the head priest, who hoped that his gifted intellect would serve the church well. With access to the libraries of the church, Cardano took advantage and secretly studied works of natural philosophy and mathematics, which fostered lingering doubts in the existence of Theus, though he eventually went off to seminary school.

At seminary school, unable to shake his love of the city and it's nightlife, Cardano took his knowledge of mathematics to the streets, winning handily at cards and gambling and earning the ire of the local criminal element. Becoming known locally as a bit of a drunk, a plan was concocted to get Cardano drunk enough that he made sloppy mistakes that he otherwise wouldn't have and he bet and lost a massive amount of money to a local crime leader.

Without an avenue to pay back the local crime leader, Cardano used his oratorical training in the seminary convince the crime leader to let him join the gang, and found work as a fence at night, where his training in oratory allowed him the opportunity to convince sellers to fence their goods more cheaply.

It was there that he got greedy.

He started skimming profits by selling the stolen goods for a greater profit and pocketing the difference, and then using the funds to get back into gambling, hoping to save up enough to pay off his debt.

During one particular card game, he took one naive mark for over 500 guilders. This mark turned out to be the son of a wealthy local noble. When the mark complained to his father, the local noble declared war on the local criminal element.

It wasn't long before Cardano's boss found that Cardano was responsible, especially when he didn't have an explanation for where the money had come from. Taking the money, the crime boss ordered Cardano's execution. With the local criminal element hunting for him, as well as the son of a wealthy noble whose honor was besmirched, Cardano decided to sign up as crew with the first ship sailing to parts unknown.

Unfortunately for him, the wealthy noble ordered all ships impounded and prevented them from leaving. Only one ship dared defy his orders, and that ship had no need of more crew, save for a ship's doctor. Stopping by the Vaticine church library to steal a book on human anatomy and medicine, Cardano lied his way on the ship and bid farewell the criminal element, the guards, and the seminary and started his new life as a sailor and ship's doctor.

Game notes:

I left names and places unspecific so the GM can fill them in as needed. Assuming my XP total is okay, I plan on buying a bunch of knacks with them, like Doctor, and with the GM's permission, I'd like to invent a new knack, Probability and Statistics. Cardano is named after the Italian mathematician who wrote the first known treatise on probability, and the middle name, Galois, is after the French mathematician who developed group theory and died in a duel at the age of 20.

It's your XP, spend it as you wish.

Mark may override me on this but I am going to say NO to the new knack. You don't need it. Anything it would cover falls under mathematics.

If you were going to invent it. That would be done during PA time as a background. (And with a 5 point Hunted, getting it done would be tough)
I don't mind growing old... but I hate growing up.
