I signed on to sail before the mast. Seeing as the parts of the game I hate were the ones forced on him or added later, I like the possible outcome of this.

So long as mechanics are not scrapped for a "roll a d6 and that's it" method, I will be open to what he wants to try.

If you go to John Wick presents site, which was linked on the end of the AEG announcement, there is a post titled "No Dice".

Read that and consider the possibilities

You do realize the suppressed final sermon of the second prophet revealed you are all characters in a game?

I know that one is true because I was there when it was sealed away in the actual info we ate never giving the GMs vault.

Stephen, this is NOT the best thing to happen to you this year.

And now to jump the gun... The new combat system so does not accurately portray combat and I working on a 300 page set of revisions.

Sorry, just wanted to beat somebody to it.

BTW, everyone take a closer look at that first pic, you can get a glimpse of the new Reputation mechanic. I am really REALLY liking that.

Ignoring what appears to be missing and focusing on what we can see...

First item: Arcana contains a virtue AND hubris. That is something several of us have toyed with and it opens a ton of possibility.

Second item: lack of built up points in skills. This points away from a shift to the old L5R keep knack thing a ton of people have been begging for since the game released. (Or else this character is really incompetent)

Item three: skill organization. I'm going to hedge this by suggesting it's a shortcut list and not organized by skill block for ease of play. But it may suggest a shift in style to buying knacks directly instead of skill sets.

Item four: the backgrounds. Read like job descriptions that may be supplying your skill sets. This is going to push players into a limited number of options before they just run out of points. (And prevent those "I have every knack" characters) do not mistake this for character classes. It looks to be a mix and match type thing for you Nun/Spy or Smuggler/Casanova/Duelist players.

Item five: the reputation list. Looks like this is going to merge some of the old background stuff. Getting known for certain things will likely lead to side quests and such. I think this is suited for characters like Don Gallo, Rene, Lady Bravada, Francois and my old Rodrigo character ( who would likely break the system).

Item six: not sure how I feel about a religion listing. I have to keep in mind that the era was very, very strongly aligned on that issue. Much more than the game has been. It may just be a flavor listing augmenting the "profession" line that never meant anything either.

And that long post is my 15 second first impression as viewed on my phone.

Edit: forgot while typing to note that I am intrigued by an advantage titled "Die Hard"

If that is research, let's lay odds on plans being to expand not replace existing sourcebook material. Because there would be way too much to rewrite on top of adding a continent. But wise scholarly types have noted that Italian trade dominance came out of routes through Africa and the mid East. So maybe he's looking to correct a gap.

The Africa equivalent was going to be called something like Tar-Nejatar or something like that? I'm pretty sure I'm recalling that incorrectly.

I wouldn't mind some retweaking of the lore, all things considering.

We never had a name for it that I recall. Remember discussing some vague thoughts about a southern island/landmass to equate but no real details. Patrick put some work into it before we got nudged in the direction of the Western hemisphere.

But I honestly don't have interest in spreading a game beyond the continent so I never needed the material for an Africa.
