Just heard Dennis O'Neal died. :( I loved his work on Batman and especially Green Arrow/Green Lantern.

THAT is the most miserable thing i have heard this month...

Well, maybe number 3 but yeah.

Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Batman, The Question. His work is easily my favorite of his generation of writers.

And now news that Joe Sinnott just died :( (for those who don't know, he's most famous for being inking damn near every book Marvel ever put out at one time or another, including a memorable run on Fantastic Four lasting from 1965-1981, yes you read that right.)

Speaking of Black Panther. Comixology (online comic book reader) is now giving free access to all Black Panther books for the rest of the month in memorial.

Unrelated, it's been a while since I updated this. So I have a couple of recommendations. Once and Future. The scabbard of Excalibur is found and that signals a dark prophecy (basically bringing King Arthur back to, unLife) so famous monster hunter Bridgete McGuire and her nephew Duncan have to get their hands dirty.

Fun read.

Next up, Blacksad. Old fashioned film noir at its best. Gangsters, Gun Molls, tough guys, cold steel .45s. This book has it all. Oh yea, and they're anthropomorphic animals. It's actually really a fun read (oh and as a bonus the series has won about every comic book award there is).

I finished Hysteria. I would say overall, meh. It's the kind of story you'd come to expect from Howard Chaykin It's just lacking, well, something.

Another recommendation. The October Faction (yes the basis for that series on Netflix that reads like it's a Supernatural clone but isn't really.) The writing is sharp and painful, the art is creepy as hell. And as a bonus the Netflix show and the comic are way different.

Also picked up a couple of trades that caught my eye.
Batman: Curse of the White Knight is the sequel to White Knight the best Batman series in years! This is written/drawn by the same folks.
Slaughterhouse-Five (yes Kurt Vonnegut) now in Graphic Novel form!
and Red Mother (I know absolutely nothing about this, but the cover is just disturbing to look at).

So, thanks to nothing being normal, i am very, very laye to the party but i did throw the local shop some money and somebody kindly dropped some things my way yesterday.

DC has been doing some Anniversary books of late.

Action and Detective 1000 both showed up. And tyey made them $10 one hundred page specials and they had some very good stuff in them.

Then somebody decided we can do one for every character as an 80th anniversary of their debut. Wonder Woman got one, Robin got one, the Flash got one and all of these had stories from past and present writers and artists. Some parts are good, some... not so much.

Yesterday, I got my hands on the one for The Joker and Green Lantern.

The Joker book has one terribly weak story by James Tynion trying to hype his new Punchline character. It has a a mediocre Paul Dini story that at least sort of captures the more clownish aspects that the rest of the creators have all but forgotten.

It has a Azzarello/Lee Bermejo story that makes little sense but i expect that.

And then it has a Denny O'Neil story and I am thinking to myself, this is probably the last original Denny story i will ever get... and it is good but not great but as a farewell, totally worthy.

And then the book gets dark and crazy. Scott Snyder Peter Tomasi, Tony Daniel, and Gary Whitta all turn out great crazy Joker tales that all try to reveal just how psychotic and awful the Joker can be.

And then Eduardo Medeiros hits it on the head and drives home a classic that deserved it's own book.

And in the middle of all this is a story called "Birthday Bugs" by Tom Taylor that will keep me awake tonight. I don't want to live in a world with Tom Taylor...he is scary.

This one is well worth the read.

And then there is the Green Lantern Anniversary book. Green Lantern has always been my favorite book. Even bad Green Lantern is full of power rings and high imagination. Even with 8 or 9 human Green Lanterns now running about, i love 'em all.

So what do we get?
An Alan Scott emo retelling of his origin that trues to reframe his oath. Pretty weak opener... and it's Tynion again. Maybe i just don't like that guy's writing.

Geoff Johns steps up for a Hal Jordan story about what Hal would do in his dying and out of power Abin Sur moment... Geoff nails this with a good but self centered Hal moment. Fun read.

Cullen Bunn gets a take on Sinestro giving us a "every villian thinks he is the hero" tale. It works here quite well.

And i turn the page to find...a Denny O'Neil Green Lantern/Green Arrow tale. IGET ONE MORE DENNY STORY! No lie, i skipped it and came back after the rest. It hits everything i remember about that classic run and adds some philosophy. It is not GREAT but better than the Joker tale and a much better farewell.

Ron Marz wastes some pages belaboring the point from his run on how Kyle Rayner was the only hope for a while. At least he wrote in a fight scene.

Peter Tomasi follows with a trite Guy amd Kilowog story that is exactly the type of story people expect in these anniversary issues and avoid them for.

Then we get a John Stewart story from...Dwayne MacDuffie's widow? Google says she wrote for My Little Pony, that explains it. Not a winner.

Robert Venditti retells a stale old soldier story with the big 4 earth lanterns. Couple one panel jokes are good but this is a tired and worn out plot.

Mariko Tamaki needed more pages to make her Jessica Cruz story work. It is a so-so story about anxiety. Could have been great but stuff got in the way.

And we wrap up with a Simon Baz story that is all about racism and hate. And with everything that has happened this year, it falls flat.

I liked more of this than i thought i did but the parts i teally wanted to be good were disappointing (except Denny)

Also caught up and finished parts 3 and 4 of The Question. A DC Black Label by Jeff Lemire, Denys Cowan and Bill Seinkiewicz. I am not a huge Lemire fan. He keeps starting stuff with great vision that just sort of falls apart after 3 issues. And it is usually really supernatural in theme.

This series starts the same way, takes a street level tough guy and tosses him into a supernatural story. But the last issue righted the ship, made a timely, timely message and paid great homage to a series i loved back in the day.

(And just like that, we are back to Denny O'Neil)

How’s this for a Once & Future recommendation, reading through issue 11, I screamed out loud, “Gaaaa! No! You idiot! Why would you DO that?!?!?!!!” I was loud enough that not one but two kids came to see what was wrong.

p. 23 if you’re curious.

Those two kids being children that live with you or kids from down the street?

Because if it was two of your own, they just wanted to see what child 3 did to earn the shouting.

If it is two from down the street, then you meed to stop buying comics and start buying new locks.

This week's reading.
Finished Red Mother. Good, creepy, weird, basically the first five issues are really just set up.

Also read all the way through Bone Parrish. Since I have Delta Green on my mind, this would make for a great DG story (I won't spoil it, but it is left open enough that a good second series is all set up for them).

Black Hammer the not quite avengers not quite Justice league members fought a big bad (who may or may not be Darksied in disguise) kill him and for their bravery are blown "somewhere else" that doesn't have people with powers or even an awareness of superheroes. Worse, they can't leave so they're just living their lives of quiet desperation. Compelling so far. I'm now on the second trade.

Gideon Falls the infamous black barn is back. I read the first trade last year, just re-read it and the next two. Still good and just like any good story, all the seemingly random people who get caught up in it are far more related than anyone realized. So far so good.

Lady Killer read the first trade years ago too, but never got to see how it ends. spoiler alert it doesn't. So frustrating. Such a good series that just simply stopped.

Pickups (all these recommended by local folks) Department of Truth (just got it last night so I haven't cracked it open), Skulldigger and Skeleton boy (from the world of Black Hammer which is how I got into that), and Die Have no opinions about any of these as I haven't started them yet.

Re: Comics Thread (was My OFFICIAL Apology to Dave)

Re-Reading John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four. I still think its really underrated. He took them back to their origins as explorers not superheroes, and did a great job expanding both the characters (Terrax and Frankie Raye as Heralds of Galactus) and the mythology (that alternate reality Dr. Doom story is probably my favorite Doom story ever!)

In other comic news, the youngest has to read for 20min a day, and was balking a bit. So I gave him the DC Showcase edition of The Warlord (1stIS-28) I read it to him when he was younger, but this is his own first read-through. After that it was Darkhorse's collection of old Conan stories from Marvel, and finally he's up to Walt Simonson's run of Thor. He thinks Beta Ray Bill is awesome (so he has good taste).

Next a complaint. So I am dipping my toe back into Kickstarters, and saw (what I thought to be) a really interesting comic, horror, WWII, Cthulhu mythos kind of thing. Harpies Origins: Betty. Looks cool (though right off the winged mouse I notice Betty our heroine is wearing a tight shirt and very short miniskirt, in WWII). Still it's a comic book and they do that kind of thing, so if it has a good story I can tolerate. But then, looking through the Kickstarter, all I see for their selling points is various "Naughty" or "Nice" covers. (oh and point of order, if your "Nice" covers are nice because you just don't show areola, is that really "Nice"???) Like I mean DOZENS! Sheesh. I mean I'm no prude, but if your whole selling point is "Nekked Bewbies!!!!11!!!" and you don't even discuss the adventure, you ain't gettin' my money.

The artist on that worked for Zenoscope. That company pretty much made their living on porn covers. And i would guarantee you those "naughty variants will not arrive with little black circles on them.

So write it off as trash.

AT LAST!

Another Swashbuckling Comic! I happened upon this on one of my many (many, many) comic book forums. It's an old (way back to '06) indie comic called The Black Coat initially just 4 issues but then it turned out popular enough to warrant a couple more series and several one-shots. I picked up the first, A Call to Arms (because honestly, I didn't realize there'd be more).

But its good fun. Think Zorro in pre-revolution America with access to top-of-the-line tech (for the time). He deals with the British, Occultists and the like.

Anyway, it's not super plentiful to find. HOWEVER, those in charge decided to release it online! So you can read the whole thing for free!

Here you go! https://the-black-coat.com/

So the local shop ran a year end sale. Half off back issues to clear some box space. And $5 selection of select trades that have no chance of selling. So for $5 i got some time fillers. Sone Millar Ultimates books some Bendis new avengers that i still can't figure out which run it belongs to. (There were literally 3 "New Avengers trade #1" books each with a different story each containing New Avengers 1-6. Marvel really needs to stop restarting books.

AND...
Something i normally would not read...Deadpool.

...from the Battleworlds event arc. (AKA Marvel's terrible attempt at doing a Crisis story)

Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars.

They retconned Deadpool into the 1984 Secret Wars event book and retell the story in 4 issues.

As a bonus, you get him tossed into the Original Contest of Champions and a reprint of the original Secret Wars #1.

If you read the original secret wars, it will amuse you. More when.you realize how much of the other character's dialogue is verbatim.

<THREAD HIGHJACK>

Kieron Gillen wrote an RPG for the Die! comic. Not some little namby-pamby 20 or so page thing. The Main book is 187 pages, the Character sheets one is another 20ish, and the Arcana one is almost 90. Holy crap.

Ain't that the truth.

Ok now back to comics. Turns out John Byrne is doing a fan fic of the X-Men (and has been doing it for a while) This particular adventure would have taken place just after Phoenix had been dealt with by the Shi'ar. Jean Grey is back on earth with the intellectual capabilities of a 5-year-old and the rest of the X-men are back at the compound (and for some reason Cyclops isn't all broken up about this). Anyway as you can tell by the set up it all harkens back to the Claremont/Byrne/Austin heyday of X-men. It's lots of fun and available free online. So here you go...

http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=55094&PN=2&totPosts=35

Just a note the series is called Elsewhen and there are currently 18 issues. The link is to issue 1. If you're looking for them all, go back to the main forum and start poking around. They're all there. The actual issues are titled X-MEN ELSEWHEN Free Fan Fic [##] (the ## is the issue number)

Firepower has a trade out for issues 1-6.

and special for Mark: There is a hardcover Moon Knight Omnibus out that covers his earliest appearances. Werewolf by night, early moon knight, avengers and defenders, etc. It is over 100 bucks and thicker than a Harry Potter novel.
